NEEDS GRATIFICATION VERSUS KNOWLEDGE GAPS
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE USES OF SATELLITE AND LOCAL TV
Abstract
This is the report of two surveys carried out in Ikoyi, a typical elite neighbourhood and Mush in, a typical urban slum, both in Lagos metropolis. The study compares the uses of Local TVand satellite TV by the residents ofboth districts for the gratification of their surveillance, diversion and interaction needs. The study establishes a heavier dependence on satellite TV by Ikoyi residents and analyses its implications against the old debate of trans-border news flow and Tichenor's Knowledge-gap hypothesis. Recommendations are submitted to guide policy formulation in Nigeria and other developing nations in the new millennium, in theface of the ever-increasing bombardment offoreign media contents.
