A Comparative Analysis c·fthe Uses and Gratifications of GSM and Landline Phones Among Students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka

Abstract

This study made a comparative analysis of the uses and qratificatiotts of the Global System of Mobile (GSM)phones and the conventional phones among students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka campus. Data were collected through the use of questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed and presented using percentage and frequency distribution. The study found that 82.2% of students in the Nsukka campus prefer using GSM phones, while 16.6% prefer conventional telephones and 1.04% say they prefer both. Those who prefer the GSM phones gave reasons for their choice. These include: the sound is clearer; it is less expensive to run, as the billing system is based on usage: it is cheaper and easier to install; and privacy in its usage, among
others. On the other hand, those who prefer the conventional telephone said it is not as fragile as GSM handsets, it cannot be easily stolen, and GSM network services are not always available, among other reasons. The study revealed that female students prefer GSM lu the coiwentional telephone because of its privacy.
