Abstract

This study aimed to determine the impact of social media use on the written expression of children in Nigeria aged 11-17 years. The researcher pursued this objective using a descriptive survey design and collected data from 300 children using a structured questionnaire. The result showed that boys and girls differ in their use of social media, and the impact it has on their written communication is also not the same. For example, girls reported a higher frequency of social media use than boys. They also spend longer time using social media than boys. Social media use also impacts girls’ written expression more than that of the boys, but boys are also affected. The more children use social media, the more likely it will negatively impact their writing skills. Areas of their written expression that are negatively impacted are using abbreviations, spelling errors, sentence construction, and choices of appropriate words.
